Blog Tour: One in a Million

Happy Friday!!!!! It’s my friends hen do this weekend so I will be MIA but first I am joined by Lindsey Kelk for a Q&A session followed by my review (in a separate post) of her latest book One in a Million!

So Lindsey, can you tell us a little about you?

My name is Lindsey, I’m from South Yorkshire originally but lived in London after uni, then New York and now I live in LA. I love books, I love TV, movies, music, professional wrestling and cats. I also like a good nap and co-host a beauty podcast called Full Coverage with my British buddy in LA, makeup artist Harriet Hadfield.

Can you  tell us about One in a Million?

I’m honestly the worst at this! One in a Million is a modernisation of My Fair Lady, inspired by my obsession with social media. Digital marketer, Annie Higgins makes a bet with Charlie, her co-worker, that she can make anyone he chooses Instagram famous inside thirty days. Unfortunately for Annie, Charlie chooses Dr Samuel Page PhD, the world’s most social media averse human being but after some gentle cajoling and a promise to help him win back his ex-girlfriend, Samuel agrees to take part in the bet. Anything more than that would be spoilers!

Can you tell us about the characters in this book?

Annie is definitely a lot like me. She’s very ambitious, putting her career ahead of her personal life and she’s not afraid to speak out when she knows she’s right. She’s also very loyal, a bit of a people pleaser and tries to find a solution to every problem. Dr Samuel is less like me in that he has still has a flip phone and has never heard of Instagram – I’m never off social media, it’s honestly kind of a curse at this point. Then we’ve got Annie’s business partner and best friend, Miranda, who is Annie’s biggest cheerleader and the character that made me happiest, Charlie Wilder from About a Girl! It was so nice to catch up with him and see what was happening in his world. I was v happy to find out his advertising agency was doing so well.

What is your favourite place to write?

I don’t really have a favourite place although right now I get most of my work done in my closet-office. And that’s not me being humble, it’s literally a cupboard that I turned into an office with the world’s smallest desk.

Where do you get your character inspiration from?

Everywhere. Mostly from my friends (sorry, buddies) and my own misadventures in life. Annie is definitely a ‘me’ character.

What are your 3 desert island books?

So hard! The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Where’d Do Go Bernadette by Maria Sempler and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. OK, I guess it wasn’t that hard after all.

What is your favourite place to read?

On a sun lounger at the La Quinta resort in Palm Springs. 100%.

What is your favourite book and why?

It’s so hard to choose just one but it’s probably The Secret History. I’ve read it time and time again, ever since my creative writing tutor recommended it to me when I was in uni. There’s always something new in there and the pacing of the plot drags me in every single time.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Anything and everything! My beauty podcast, Full Coverage, keeps me busy with beauty launches and events and I occasionally guest host a wrestling podcast called Tights and Fights so I do spend a lot of time watching wrestling! I also love working out (which still feels weird to say) and wandering around wherever I may be with my friends. Or I’ll bin all that off and watch TV with my cats.

Do you prefer chocolate or sweets?

This is too cruel a question to answer and I shan’t.

You have a free flight and accommodation to anywhere in the world where would you go?

Japan. In a heartbeat.

Do you have a favourite childhood/teen story?

Yes! I was a voracious reader as a kid but the book that probably had the most impact on my life was Remember Me to Harold Square by Paula Danziger. It was the first book that made me fall in love with New York and after I moved there with my job, every time I passed through Herald Square, it made me think of that book. I still have a copy and will love it forever, I think.

Everyone wants that special someone….

Annie Higgins has given up on love: she’s too busy trying to get her tiny business off the ground. Infuriated by the advertising agency across the hall making fun of her job, Annie accepts their crazy challenge – to make a random stranger Instagram-famous in just thirty days.

And even when they choose Dr Samuel Page PhD, historian and hater of social media, as her target, Annie’s determined to win the bet – whether Sam likes it or not.

But getting to know Sam means getting to know more about herself. And before the thirty days are out, Annie has to make a decision about what’s really important…

Funny, real and heart-meltingly romantic, Annie and Sam’s story is My Fair Lady for the social media age – and the perfect feel-good read.

About Lindsey Kelk

Um, hi! My name is Lindsey, I’m a writer, I live in New York and I’m an interwebs addict. Phew, now I’ve got that off my chest, there’s really not much else to say. I’m from England, specifically ‘up north’, lived in London for seven years then skidaddled to New York. I’ve been here since 2009 and I really don’t particularly want to leave. It’s ever so nice.

I write books, I write articles for magazines, I blog about beauty things, sometimes I put myself in very silly situations and write about that and on the odd occasion, I interview people. I’m much better at talking about myself though. I have been described as an ‘oversharer’. And ‘gobby’. I believe this is endearing.

I love music, movies and TV. I watch WWE. A lot. It’s possible I’m actually a 14-year-old boy who is confused about his sexuality. I’m naturally blonde. The prescription for my right eye is -9.5. I’m never in one place for too long and next year I want to travel lots more. I like cooking, eating and entertaining. And fashion. And yoga. And talking all of the time. I love texting. And karaoke. And Twitter. And football. And obviously, I’m a fan of reading, writing and all things book-related. I hate mosquitoes, small-minded people and pickles. But not pickled onions. I like pickled onions. Hard to get in the states, you know.
