Today I am very excited to present you with a guest review post by the lovely Fionnuala. This is one I’ve had on my TBR for a while and after this review I’ll definitely be bumping it up.

I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Maddy, dressed in white, stands at the back of the church. At the end of the aisle is Rob – the man she’s about to marry. Next to Rob is Ben – best man and the best friend any two people ever had.

And that’s the problem.

Because if it wasn’t Rob waiting for her at the altar, there’s a strong chance it would be Ben. Loyal and sensitive Ben has always kept his feelings to himself, but if he turned round and told Maddy she was making a mistake, would she listen? And would he be right?

Best friends since childhood, Maddy, Ben and Rob thought their bond was unbreakable. But love changes everything. Maddy has a choice to make but will she choose wisely? Her heart, and the hearts of the two best men she knows, depend on it…

Thank-you to Penguin for letting me read and review this! (Originally I did have the book about a month before it was published but didn’t get round to reading it until a few weeks after it was published…)

Told in dual perspective from the point of view of Maddy and Ben this book is altogether a story of love and friendship. And I genuinely went into it thinking it was going to be a little too much like The Best Thing That Never happened to me – but surprisingly it held its own and whilst the storyline may not be the most original it was told in such a way that I could forgive that.

Fletcher made me fall in love with all the characters, especially Ben.

Whilst Fletcher’s writing doesn’t seem to shift of change in-between the alternating chapters I could still differentiate between who was talking, when Ben was talking it felt like Ben was talking, and when Maddy was talking it felt like Maddy was talking – rather than just mushing into one giant stream of conciousness from the same person. Similarly one thing that really stood out for me when reading this was how genuine it was, I often find it hard to really fall in with character dynamics and friendships but Fletcher had just hit the nail on the head with this and it was perfect. It really felt like you were experiencing what real life friendship is.

I can’t say the ending was what I wanted it to be because between two guys there’s always going to be one who came out slightly worse, but it was satisfying to say the least. Sure, I wanted Maddy to pick them both, and for everyone to live happily ever after but even then Giovanna made me love the story even more. I definitely recommend this is you’re a fan of contemporaries, or really if you just want to sit back and chill out with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate, I will warn you, you might just forget about your hot chocolate whilst reading this book though.

In short I really enjoyed reading this and I can’t wait to read more of Fletcher’s work if she publishes anything else – I still have to read Billy & Me though!

About Giovanna Fletcher

Giovanna grew up in Essex with her Italian dad Mario, mum Kim, big sister Giorgina and little brother Mario, and spent most of her childhood talking to herself (it seems no one wanted to listen) or reading books.

At thirteen she left Essex behind to attend the full-time Sylvia Young Theatre School, where she met her husband Tom Fletcher. Following SYTS she completed an acting BA (hons) at Rose Bruford – since then she's been acting, chaperoning mini actors and dabbling in a spot of freelance journalism.

Giovanna is a firm believer in the power of magpies and positive energy. To see what makes Giovanna smile, view her blog at www.giovannasworld.com, or her Twitter page @mrsgifletcher

Billy and Me is Giovanna's debut novel.
