Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savouring every pleasure Lunathion—otherwise known as Crescent City— has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city—and Bryce’s world.
Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most notorious nightclubs. But when the murderer attacks again, Bryce finds herself dragged into the investigation and paired with an infamous Fallen angel whose own brutal past haunts his every step.
Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, wants nothing to do with Bryce Quinlan, despite being ordered to protect her. She stands for everything he once rebelled against and seems more interested in partying than solving the murder, no matter how close to home it might hit. But Hunt soon realizes there’s far more to Bryce than meets the eye—and that he’s going to have to find a way to work with her if they want to solve this case.
As Bryce and Hunt race to untangle the mystery, they have no way of knowing the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the darkest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir...

I really enjoyed the ACOTAR series so I was very excited to start this book. When I saw it on borrowbox I just had to borrow it from my library.

The narrator was excellent. I’ve listened to a few audiobooks with Elizabeth as the narrator. I always find her engaging and suspenseful. The narrator is so important to an audiobook and Elizabeth is definitely on my favourites list.

I enjoyed the story a lot but if you have read ACOTAR you will start to wonder if the two books are in the same universe. They aren’t but some parts seem extremely familiar. That for me was irritating. If they aren’t meant to be in the same universe then they should have been very different.

This book was also HUGE. I think it could have been shorter. there was a lot of parts that were drawn out. SJM’s writing is easy to read and comforting. There was a lot of world-building in this book. As it’s the first in the series, this is expected.

I loved the variety of different mythical ‘creatures’ in this book. I love the fantasy element of the book. I find these sorts of things fascinating.

This book had a big emphasis on friendship which I loved. Bryce and Danica would do ANYTHING for each other and that is very special. Bryce is a strong female character which I liked. She isn’t this little damsel in distress.

This was the good start to a new series and I’m excited to see where it goes.

About Sarah J. Maas

Sarah J. Maas is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series (Queen of Shadows, Book 4, will be out in September 2015), as well as the A Court of Thorns and Roses series (out 5/5/15).

Sarah lives in Bucks County, PA, and over the years, she has developed an unhealthy appreciation for Disney movies and bad pop music. She adores fairy tales and ballet, drinks too much tea, and watches an ungodly amount of TV. When she’s not busy writing, she can be found exploring the historic and beautiful Pennsylvania countryside with her husband and canine companion.
