The truth can be a dangerous thing…
When a young boy is thrown from a balcony in a block of flats, DS Grace Allendale witnesses the shocking aftermath of the tragic event. But despite everything, no one will admit to seeing who did it – and the parents will only tell the police that it was an accident.
Determined to bring the perpetrator to justice, Grace must sort the truth from the lies in a case that takes her into the darkest corners of the criminal world – and strikes closer to home than she could have ever imagined…

This is the third book in the DS Allendale series. I LOVED the first two books so I was very excited to see what Grace was up to this time.

This book focused less on Grace and her life than the previous 2 books but for me that was okay. Sometimes it’s important for the case to be front and centre and this case is one that needed attention. A young child almost died but no one would help. This immediately makes Grace suspicious of what is going on in this estate. Who wouldn’t want to help a child?

This case was very gritty. There was so much more going on than it initially seemed. So many horrible things happened and I felt so so much sympathy for these characters, especially Ruby.

Mel had me gripped from beginning to end. The book was pacy with lots of twists and turns. The story is horrific but believable. It will keep you up way past your bedtime because you will NOT be able to put this book down!

I liked flitting between the past and the present. If you are a regular reader of my reviews then you will know that I love stuff like this.

Mel did an excellent job with this crime thriller and I cannot wait to see what is in store for Grace in book 4.

About Mel Sherratt

I write police procedurals, psychological suspense and women’s fiction with a punch – or grit-lit, as I call it. Shortlisted for the prestigious CWA (Crime Writer’s Association) Dagger in Library Award 2014, my inspiration comes from authors such as Martina Cole, Lynda la Plante, Mandasue Heller and Elizabeth Haynes.

TAUNTING THE DEAD is part police procedural/part psychological thriller. It has been a standalone for two years but I have now written two more books with Detective Sergeant Allie Shenton as a main character and created a new series. FOLLOW THE LEADER will be published on 10 February 2015 followed by ONLY THE BRAVE on 26 May 2015.

THE ESTATE SERIES are a mix of women’s fiction, psychological suspense and crime thriller. They are often too dark for women’s fiction alone – although the subject matters and issues are often referred to in this genre – too light in places for crime thrillers, and often not enough for the psychological suspense readers out there. They are drama meets crime.

WATCHING OVER YOU is a standalone psychological thriller. It’s dark in places, light in places, disturbing in places too – where obsession and friendship turns to murder.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer) and makes liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for some of my books. You can find out more at my website www.melsherratt.co.uk or I’m on Twitter at @writermels
