The house has soft, purple wisteria twining around the door. You step inside.

The hall is cool after the hot summer's day. The welcome is kind, and always warm.

Yet something makes you suspect life here can't be as perfect as it seems.
After all, the brightest smile can hide the darkest secret.

But wouldn't you pay any price to have a glorious place like this?

Welcome to Winterfold.
Martha Winter's family is finally coming home.

This book has been on my TBR pile for a while and as part of the Netgalley challenge I’m taking part in I thought it was high time I read it. I have previously read 2 books by Harriet but have many more on my wishlist.

This book has quite a lot of characters but I felt like I knew them all a little bit by the end of the book. I liked that each chapter focused on one person and explained what had happened in their lives.

The Winter family seem to have lost their way a bit. You can tell that at one point they were all  a really happy family even with whatever secrets they hold but now they just seem a little sad and lost

I felt so horribly sad for Cat and I think she was the character I identified with the most. I think that she would be the one that I would be friends with.

It’s very hard to review such a short part of the story but it’s a good opening and it really sets the scene for what I hope is a very interesting story. I can’t wait to read part 2.

About Harriet Evans

Hi there, greetings and thanks for stopping to read this. I have written eight novels (WHAT? how did that happen. That’s completely bonkers.) Yes, eight. Anyway while I get over that, what else do you need to know? I live in London, near the canal. I like: the Golden Girls, karaoke, the clothes shop Anthropologie, books books and more books, and my daughter Cora and my boyfriend Chris. Not in that order. I used to work in publishing and look at authors and think well, I can do that! So I thought I’d fulfill my life-long ambition and try writing a book because how hard can it be? Now I know the answer which is: er, kind of pretty hard. But it’s the best job in the world (apart from acting in musicals which one day I also hope to do *stop kidding yourself & get back to work*) and I know that too.

My latest novel is A PLACE FOR US, which is out at the moment in an absolutely beautiful paperback (which I like to stroke in my spare time) and e-book. It opens with the matriarch of the Winter family, Martha, sitting down at the breakfast table one morning to write out the invitations that will call the family back from around the world home to their beautiful house Winterfold for a reunion where she will reveal a long-held secret… I have been completely thrilled and chuffed that people have enjoyed it, thank you to everyone who has taken the time to say nice things about it. If you read it, I really hope you like it too.
