Q&A with Lindsay J. Pryor

Good Morning lovely people. Today I am excited to be joined by Lindsay J Prior to get to know her a little better…

Tell us a little about you…

I’ve been writing for over thirty years and have been published for the last four. I currently write dark, multi-layered Gothic paranormal romance set in the gritty and dystopian urban world of BLACKTHORN. An Amazon bestselling series, it has achieved numerous Gothic and PNR Amazon number ones both in the UK and the US.

I was discovered through an international romance writing competition after being a finalist for two years running. I was approached by Bookouture and asked to be their launch author back in 2012.

Although I now write full-time, I’m a qualified Psychology lecturer and English teacher.  I taught for eighteen years, primarily to improve literacy for children with special needs. I was born and grew up in Wales but now live in England with my husband, our rescue bunny and a plethora of wild woodland creatures.

Tell us about your new book…

Blood Bound is the penultimate book in my BLACKTHORN series.

Set against a dystopian urban backdrop, BLACKTHORN is a dark, complex and multi-layered Gothic paranormal romance series. Primarily based around a polluted, over-populated, rotten core of a locale, Blackthorn itself is the district where the ‘third species’, such as vampires and lycans, are forced to live. They’re given the dregs in terms of location, provision, opportunities and rights whilst being ruled by the iron fist of the more privileged humankind from whom they’re segregated.

The series is about eight individuals who end up fighting to overthrow the oppressive human-led regime that has blighted their lives. It consists of eight books with an over-arching plot that follows the stories of these four couples whose forbidden romances could prevent the inevitable devastation that will occur for both the third species and humans should they fail.

The books are most definitely best read in order.

What is your favourite place to write?

I have a few different places around the house, but my reading room overlooks my woodland garden and is really peaceful. I mainly write there. It’s also my house rabbit’s favourite room and she loves to sit at my feet while I work.

Where do you get your character inspiration from?

Probably out of my fascination for complex, conflicted characters. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy writing Dark PNR so much – I love the flexibility the genre allows. Neither the hero nor the heroine need to be guaranteed to do the right and moral thing, nor fit society’s view of what that is. There’s no clear-cut good and bad. Dark PNR allows for its characters to be shades of grey – and there’s a heck of a lot of scope in grey for a writer. When you have grey characters it can, ironically for PNR, be a truer reflection of life.

What are your 3 desert island books?

I’m sat here looking at my bookshelf. This is such a tough question! Probably the biggest collection of short stories I can find; a reference guide of what food, plants or animals to avoid whilst living on a desert island (I’d like to survive my stay, if possible); and a notebook so I can write whilst I’m there – as long as I’m allowed a pencil too?

What is your favourite place to read?

I’ll read anywhere but my reading room, bed or bath come top.

What is your favourite book and why?

Wuthering Heights. For me, the beauty of Wuthering Heights was Emily Bronte’s willingness to push aside what is deemed appropriate and right as to how heroes and heroines should behave and interact on the page to, instead, focusing on enabling the rawness and power of the romance to take centre stage above social conventions.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I’m not writing, I’m reading or watching films and generally spending time with my husband. I love nature and walking so, when the weather’s reasonable, I trek along coastlines, through woods or over the moors. I definitely like the quiet life! I also make the most of spending my time chilling with my friends.

Chocolate or sweets?

Chocolate every time! Unless Jelly Belly jellybeans are on offer. I have zero willpower around those colourful little bundles of pure bliss.

Is there a book you wished you wrote?

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. That woman was a genius and way beyond her years and her time. What she created at the age of 19 (21 when it was published) that now echoes so many issues that we face today is just incredible. I’m in awe of her.

You have a free flight and accommodation to anywhere in the world where would you go?

I’m a huge film fan so Universal Studios in Florida is the first place to spring to mind.

What is your favourite season?

Argh, this is tough! I’m a massive nature lover so every season has its merits. After spending far too long pondering this, I think I’m going to opt for Autumn. It’s still warm and dry enough to get out and about, cold enough in the nights to justify snuggling up in front of the log-burner, close enough to Christmas to start getting excited and, amongst all of that, you know that Spring and Summer are up next.

Where can we find you?

You can visit my website. Everything you could need to know is there. My other main place is my FB page where I regularly chat to my readers. I receive a lot of emails too, so never hesitate to get in touch is you prefer a less public forum. I’m also on Twitter and Pinterest. Basically, I’m happy to be stalked anywhere.
