Everyone knows that Colin Bridgerton is the most charming man in London. Penelope Featherington has secretly adored her best friend's brother for...well, it feels like forever. After half a lifetime of watching Colin Bridgerton from afar, she thinks she knows everything about him, until she stumbles across his deepest secret...and fears she doesn't know him at all.
Colin Bridgerton is tired of being thought nothing but an empty-headed charmer, tired of everyone's preoccupation with the notorious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown, who can't seem to publish an edition without mentioning him in the first paragraph. But when Colin returns to London from a trip abroad he discovers nothing in his life is quite the same - especially Penelope Featherington! The girl haunting his dreams. But when he discovers that Penelope has secrets of her own, this elusive bachelor must decide...is she his biggest threat - or his promise of a happy ending?

I’ll admit that I wasn’t particularly looking forward to Colin and Penelope’s story. I am not really a fan of the trope where one party has been in love with the other for years and eventually the other realises that they have been right under their nose the whole time. I think if it was meant to be then it would have happened already. Juia however managed to write this one very well.

Usually, in these tropes, the party that is hopelessly in love is also a bit pathetic and a bit desperate. Penelope however while hopelessly in love with Colin did not ever think Colin would be in love with her. She has resigned herself to being his sister’s friend and that is all. She never dreamed that he would actually fall in love with her.

Colin was a little bit irritated when he found out Peneople’s secret but I saw it as coming from a place of love. He wanted to protect her and keep her safe. There was also a bit of jealousy in there. All in all, though Colin turned out to be one of my favourite brothers after Anthony.

Despite not looking forward to this one it actually turned out to be one of my favourites from the series. The romance was a slow build but very solid. I was desperately looking forward to Elioise’s story after finishing this one.

About Julia Quinn

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don’t read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page
